iOS 6 Finally Adds Retina Shutdown Spinner Graphic

You know the shutdown spinner on your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch? If you own latest-generation hardware, it probably drives you crazy every single time you see it. Why? Because it is a lone holdout of non-Retina UI on Apple’s otherwise beautifully high-res OS. Now, in iOS6, this has – finally – been fixed.

What’s funniest about this isn’t that we’re nerdy enough to care about such details, or even that other people cared enough about it to snap a photo of the new UI resource. The funniest part is that the photos are so bad. Even with good lighting and a whole host of photo-taking gadgets, the best that The Next Web folks could manage is the picture you see above. And here, from Marco Arment of Instapaper fame, is a photo from behind the scenes:

The SIMS

The Sims is a strategic life-simulation video game developed by Maxis and published by Electronic Arts. Its development was led by game designer Will Wright, also known for developing SimCity. It is a simulation of the daily activities of one or more virtual persons ("Sims") in a suburban household near SimCity.

Gameplay

The Sims uses a combination of 3D and 2D graphics techniques. The Sims themselves are rendered as 3D objects, but the house, and all its objects, are pre-rendered, and displayed dimetrically.
While gameplay occurs in the game's Live mode, the player may enter Build mode or Buy mode to pause time and renovate the house or lot.
When the game begins, each family will start off with §20,000 Simoleons (regardless of its number of members).

Ubuntu smartphone OS could arrive this year

At the Computex trade show Canonical officials didn't provide a specific release date for the smartphone OS

The Ubuntu smartphone OS is getting closer to release, with Canonical officials hinting the release of the mobile operating system will possibly come as early as later this year or sometime next year.
Canonical will make announcements on the Ubuntu OS for smartphones later this year, said John Barnard, global marketing manager at Canonical, at the Computex trade show in Taipei. He said development was continuing on the smartphone OS, and couldn't say if the announcements were tied to the release of the smartphone OS.

The version of Ubuntu is using the same kernel to run Android, Barnard said. When connected to a dock, the version of Ubuntu that fires up from the smartphone provides a full experience also found on the desktop version of the OS, which also includes access to Ubuntu Software Center to download applications. The Ubuntu OS loaded from the smartphone also has the Unity user interface, which is found in desktop versions of the OS.
There is commonality between the Android and Ubuntu versions as users can access contacts and can continue to receive texts and notifications when the smartphone is in Ubuntu mode.
The dual-OS will take advantage of multicore ARM CPUs and graphics processors that are being included in smartphones today, Canonical officials said. Barnard hopes the Ubuntu-Android OS combination will be found on smartphones later this year. There is a lot of interest from device makers to load the dual-OS on smartphones, Barnard said.
